A Surgeon at the
Forefront of Retinal Care
Mr Robert Henderson is a Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital — two of the world’s most distinguished centres for ophthalmic care. He has been a consultant at both institutions since 2014, following a training pathway that took him from University College London through fellowships on three continents.
After completing his medical degree at UCL and his core ophthalmology training in London, Mr Henderson undertook fellowships at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), Toronto, the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne, and a final advanced vitreoretinal fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital. This international training gave him an exceptionally broad surgical foundation, spanning both complex adult vitreoretinal surgery and the highly specialist field of paediatric retinal disease.
Mr Henderson founded the Vitreoretinal Unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital, which is now the UK’s national referral centre for paediatric vitreoretinal surgery. He is the lead surgeon for the GOSH Highly Specialised RPE65 Ocular Gene Therapy Programme — the first approved gene therapy for inherited retinal disease in the UK — and has been Principal Investigator on the world’s first CLN2 ocular gene therapy trial.
Alongside his surgical practice, Mr Henderson serves as Clinical Lead for Ophthalmology at Great Ormond Street Hospital and is Honorary Associate Professor at the UCL–GOSH Institute of Child Health. With over 112 peer-reviewed publications, he is one of the most published vitreoretinal surgeons in the United Kingdom.
In his private practice, Mr Henderson offers the full range of adult vitreoretinal surgical and medical care, bringing world-class expertise to the treatment of conditions including retinal detachment, macular hole, diabetic eye disease, and age-related macular degeneration.
Conditions
Treated
Mr Henderson offers private consultations and surgery for a comprehensive range of vitreoretinal conditions. Each patient receives a thorough assessment, a clear explanation of all treatment options, and a personalised surgical plan drawing on the latest evidence and techniques.
Retinal detachment is a sight-threatening emergency requiring prompt surgical repair. Mr Henderson performs vitrectomy, scleral buckling and pneumatic retinopexy, tailoring the approach to each patient’s specific detachment to maximise the chance of full visual recovery.

Learn more →Diabetic retinopathy and vitreous haemorrhage require timely, expert management. Mr Henderson offers surgical vitrectomy for advanced disease alongside intravitreal injection therapy and laser treatment, working closely with patients’ diabetologists to optimise overall care.
Learn more →Both wet and dry AMD are managed with the most current anti-VEGF injection therapies and emerging treatment options. Mr Henderson provides specialist assessment and a personalised ongoing management plan to preserve and maximise your vision.
Learn more →Phacoemulsification cataract surgery with premium intraocular lens implantation, including advanced toric and multifocal options. Mr Henderson is experienced in combined cataract and vitreoretinal procedures for patients requiring both interventions simultaneously.
Learn more →As founder of the vitreoretinal unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital — the UK’s national referral centre for paediatric retina — Mr Henderson offers unrivalled specialist assessment and surgical care for children with complex retinal conditions.
